A keystone species of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the black bear because without this top level consumer there would be out of control mating of the deer populations. If this were to happen the deer would eat the majority of the producers, which would cause a collapse in the ecosystem. The black bear is a predator that is necessary for the ecosystem to prosper due to the fact that it is a major factor in keeping the balance of species in the environment.
